DRUG CRIMES

Despite changes in the law regarding cannabis, drug crimes still account for a significant proportion of the arrests in the State of Florida.  According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Annual Crime Report, almost 70,000 Floridians were arrested for Drug Crimes in 2020 alone.  Many of those arrests were felonies: possession of even a minuscule amount of cocaine, heroin, MDMA, methamphetamine, opium, any mixture containing any of those drugs, or any of a wide variety of prescription drugs without a prescription are all felonies that carry potential prison sentences.  Even for a first-time offender, a felony record for drug possession can have lasting consequences that can impact a person’s academic future, their career, or both.  Further, Florida Statute § 322.055 requires that a judge suspend the license of any person convicted of a drug possession offense.  That suspension must last either six months or until the person so convicted completes a substance abuse evaluation and any recommended treatment.  Because of the potential consequences following a drug crime conviction, it is of the utmost importance that anyone arrested for one of this family of offenses consult with an experienced attorney immediately.
